Fix your Posture, Fix your Pain
I know what you’re thinking – yeah right!
You probably think I’m full of it, your doctor told you that surgery was the only option to dealing with your pain. But, let me ask you this: as part of your consult with your doctor, was your posture evaluated? Were you asked about that fall that you had as a child? Did your doctor explain how years and years of wear and tear has resulted in layers of scar tissue slowly binding and pulling other tissue in your body – creating tension and causing pain?
Before I go on, let me share with you my personal story about posture and it’s role in pain I suffered with for years.
In 1995, I completely ruputred my right Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) and needed 2 surgeries 4 months apart. Ouch! I was on crutches for nearly 3 months. After the first surgery, I couldn’t fully extend my leg because something was getting pinched between my femur and tibia. So, I had to walk on my tip toes for 4 months until the doctor went in and clipped the lesion that was getting pinched.
Life goes on… I walked from that point forward with a heavy emphasis on my left side. The pattern had been set and I didn’t even realize that I also stood predominately on my left side. 15 years later, I still had hip pain on the opposite side from the torn ACL.
If this sounds like something you’ve experienced, keep reading.
I started massage school in 2006. I was amazed one class when the instructor teaching us how to perform a postural analysis explained to me how I was standing on my left side – something I wasn’t aware of. She said to me words that changed my life: “every time you see the color blue, check in with yourself and see how you’re standing.” Genius, I tell you! Her words helped change my stance, and the annoying pain went away. Simple as that – of course, the regular massages I was receiving helped as well!
Posture is so important and cannot be undervalued.
You see, I was like most people out there. I didn’t have a clue what I was doing and how it was causing me pain. I went to physical therapy after both surgeries – another horror story, but that’s for another day – and not once was my posture or gait evaluated. I wasn’t educated on potential problems down the road if a pattern developed early after surgery and the likely pain that would result. In retrospect, it caused me a lot of future problems.
Let me explain further.
People crave answers to their pain syndromes. They know they are hurting and that it’s not natural to hurt so much everyday. They go to the doctor for answers, and when the doctor says that surgery will help, they grasp on to the rope like they’re being pulled from the abyss.
Pain can be very oppressive and depressing when you experience it for long periods of time. Waking up in pain, working with pain, going to sleep in pain – no one wants that. So, when the doctor says that the surgery will help, people jump on it. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes, surgery is the answer – like when my ACL was completely ruptured. Yet, there are times when a more natural approach will help relieve pain, naturally and without nasty side effects.
I’ve worked on thousands of clients over the years. I’d honestly say that the majority (and we’re talking 80% at least) have no clue about their pain or their posture. They don’t understand how an accident 20 years ago can still be playing a role in their pain today. They believe that getting old is reason enough to be in pain.
The clue’s are there for us to see – head tilts, shoulder elevation differences, torso rotations, plus more – that are explanations for things like headaches, shoulder pain, or bulging discs. Watch the evening news sometime and look at the reporters heads – watch for the tilts in their head, or look at their eyes where one is bigger than another. Look closely at yourself in the mirror – or better yet – go thru photo’s of you
You see, unlike other healthcare models, a postural approach to pain relief brings lasting results rather than temporary and unsatisfactory results. Traditionally, with an injury, patients are given “the soup” from medical practitioners. Pain relievers, muscle relaxants, and anti-inflammatories – which mask the pain and don’t do much to fix the original problem. Lets say you’ve overdone yard work one weekend and your low back is killing you. You go to the doctor and are given pain pills and muscle relaxants – and their damaging effects to your liver.
Sadly, you leave with the pills – but without answers as to why you are in pain and how to fix the pain. You leave the office frustrated and in pain.
Taking a postural approach to fixing your pain long term requires that you first understand some rules about posture and that you understand how poor posture can affect many components of your life.
In my book Fix Your Posture, Fix Your Pain, I explain in depth how posture causes pain – and that there are certain laws that describe why that pain syndrome will stay in your body for years!
What I’ve discovered over the years is that, unfortunately for you, the majority of providers don’t take the time to describe what’s going on – leaving most frustrated and unclear on why they hurt and without an understanding on how to remove their pain naturally and without drugs.
In working with my clients over the years, I thought it would be great to put together a book where I teach a much bigger audience about their body, posture and how to help REMOVE PAIN from more people’s lives.
All day long, we hold ourselves in postures that perpetuate pain. And there is a greater force at play that we cannot get away from that lock the patterns in even more if we don’t do anything to negate the effects – and that is gravity.
Physical forces will always do its thing – GRAVITY
Posture patterns will result in physical forces because of gravity. It has to – if we continually stand in ways to adapt to a leg length difference, or tight muscles, or rotations in our torso, it will create a force that results in a dysfunction in our body.
Now, before I tell you another word about the amazing Fix Your Posture, Fix Your Pain e-book that I put together for you, check out this testimonial from a client of mine:
I have always had lower back pain. I have been to massage therapists, one after another with no relief. Then I meet Shari! She talked of being structurally sound and how important it is. Shari did an assessment and knew right away that I was not structurally sound. Sure enough x-rays showed my left leg was just a tiny bit shorter then my right.
Shari gave me a link to a site that sales a little lift to put on the inside of shoes. I purchased one for my left shoe and right away the lower back pain was gone. No one knows that I have something in my shoe and I am relived from that lower back pain.
Thank you Shari, you truly are amazing!
You are an angle sent to give so many of us relief from pain!
reviewed – just 19. But I had a LOT of problems with my health including: headaches, right eye vision loss, daily nausea, constant dizziness, lactose intolerance, hypoglycemic, foot pain, right knee pain, hip pain, constant knee popping, low back pain, right shoulder pain with decreased range of motion, no energy, and inability to sleep. I’m now a massage therapist and I am virtually pain free after having my posture analyzed and corrected 2 years ago.
Within a week of being analyzed, I had relief from all of these seemingly unconnected symptoms. Foot, knee, hip and shoulder pain – gone. Headaches, nausea, dizziness – gone. My vision returned within days. I finally felt “normal.” I did have a leg length difference that was pretty significant – but the bodywork I received from Shari and others on the team really helped bring my body back along with a shoe lift. Now I can talk with my clients about posture and it helps me educate them when I share my story.
These stories are similar to what I hear everyday. I find the more questions I ask, the more it reveals how connected problems really are.
Let’s be honest, ok?
If you don’t SEE your posture, you can’t FIX your posture. If your posture isn’t something that you’ve thought about, then you haven’t had the tools to FIX it forever. And, if your health care team isn’t looking, you are left without the tools to help yourself feel better.
That’s a fact!
I mean, who’s looking at:
Your posture plays a role in nearly all functions in your body – and no one is looking at it anymore!
